Bookish (And Not So Bookish) Thoughts

Christine over at Bookishly Boisterous has decided to make it official. If you want to participate, head over to her blog.

octobers

To quote Anne of Green Gables.

1. I was in Montreal last week on my brother’s birthday. I felt bad for missing it, so to make up for it we are going to the Mile High Horror Film Festival tonight. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is. We’ll see how that goes.

2. For those few of you who follow me on Instagram, you already know that I started painting my library last night. I’m hoping to wrap it up tonight. Be jealous of my hot Friday night. Really, I had procrastinated long enough, it was time to get that project rolling – haha, get it?

(Just ignore me.)

3. A vacuum cleaner saleswoman tried to sell me a vacuum (of course), there was a whole presentation involved that I had to sit through. She kept looking at me funny, like she was expecting a certain reaction before she finally bursts out with “I just can’t get a read on you”. I am typically hard to read emotionally – there was a Vulcan adoption joke when I was younger – but, frankly, I am never going to get excited about a vacuum cleaner. It doesn’t exactly get my panties in a twist (Heath Ledger! Baby Joseph Gordon-Levitt!).

4. I mentioned in my last review that I had a song stuck in my head. It’s still there and it’s been a full week. I wake up humming Do I Wanna Know?, I just want it to stop. I suppose it could be worse, it could be Work Bitch.

5. The whole David Gilmour debacle is entertaining. My favorite part was his pseudo-apology, in regards to his publisher: “He was concerned that this was going to affect the general climate around the book, that some women might not like the book if they think that that’s my policy. And that’s one of the reasons that I’m apologizing. Normally I actually wouldn’t.” So while I do think his original quotes were taken out of context and he probably isn’t a bad guy, I don’t know that I’ll bother to pick up a David Gilmour book anytime soon. Though, to be fair, I wasn’t going to even before he said he didn’t like teaching books written by women.

6. I have a low resting heart rate, usually somewhere around 50 bpm. I also have low blood pressure, maybe 80/50. I mention it because I have to get my physical done this month and it is always entertaining to see the look on the various nurses faces as they insist on redoing the tests. It’s good to have something to look forward to.

7. I was blurbed on Joe R. Lansdale’s site; it made me happy (and increased my traffic).

8. It had been on my list of goals to go to San Francisco this year. Sadly, I don’t think I will get there, but the primary reason I wanted to go (in addition to the food) was to see the Prelinger Library. It looks amazing. Someday.

9. I’ve not seen Wet Hot American Summer, but I had been considering moving it to the top of my Netflix queue (the wait for Breaking Bad is apparently very long). However, I stumbled across Roger Ebert’s review. This review did two things for me: it made me realize that I actually miss him and that I won’t be moving this particular movie to the top of my list.

10. Kate Spade’s new collection was inspired by all things bookish. It’s gorgeous and dangerous. While I was *thisclose* to buying a new handbag, I resisted. I mostly think I’m just not fancy enough for (another) Kate Spade bag. Instead, I’m seriously considering purchasing this one from Wood & Faulk. It’s probably a good thing that I work someplace where kale is awesome, composting is cool, and Monsanto is the most evil of all.  A tool bag masquerading as a handbag will fit right in. I’m not girly in many ways, I don’t get my hair done, I’ve never had a manicure/pedicure or a massage, and I don’t have an obsession with shoes. I do, however, have a weakness for handbags.

Although I’m happy it’s finally October, I woke up to snow this morning and to the water company knocking on my door to tell me they were shutting my water off for the next 8 hours. What are you up to this week? Anyone else being subjected to an early bout of winter?
