Bookish (And Not So Bookish) Thoughts

This week’s top ten list: Best Sequels Ever! Since I already shared my opinion about sequels here, I’m skipping this week’s list. I am, yet again, stealing (with credit) Christine’s (at Bookishly Boisterous) Bookish and Not So Bookish Thoughts. Fair warning, a few of the pictures I’m sharing are rather disgusting (and unedited – high class, high quality blogging for the win).

(It’s parenthetically worth noting that there are far too many parenthesis in the opening paragraph.)

1. My library looks like a white chair graveyard, where all the pretty furniture goes to die (or, in this case, to wait for a buyer). Craigslist/Thrift Stores are my enemy. The problem hasn’t reached used book store proportions yet, but it’s close.

I just had new windows put in, which is why I have painters tape on the windows. But yes, I do believe I’ve previously mentioned my love of white furniture.

2. I’m trying to finish up house projects. I both love and hate it. I love it when it’s done but hate the process of actually getting it done. Current project: master bathroom. Side project: Library. Painting may very well be the bane of my existence.

Before. I have to credit the previous owner’s creativity. I never would have thought to use wood to create my faucet. As an added bonus, when you wash your hands you can get a splinter for free. Please note the pink ceiling. Rory + Pink…no.

Before. To see what happened to the sink on the right, go here. Otherwise please enjoy the pink flowered wallpaper, pink counters, gold trim, and moldy carpet.

During. There was gold sparkle linoleum below the carpet.

During. There was gold sparkle linoleum underneath the carpet. Yesss!

All that rotting subfloor is exactly why you don't have carpet next to running water.

All that rotting subfloor is exactly why you don’t have carpet next to running water. New subfloor, new tile, new sink, new vanity, new window, new shower base, etc. etc.

After. Horrible photo, but you get the picture (haha...).

After. The room's almost done. At least close enough for me to be willing to share a picture.

The master bath is done, only 50 or so more projects to go. I’m accepting volunteers, I’m willing work with any skill level (and I have a very lovely guest room). Anyone?

3. I almost never abandon a book, but I didn’t finish Red Moon by Benjamin Percy.

4. It is rare that I hear a song that reminds me of absolutely nothing else, but it happened this week when I heard ‘Come With Me Now’ by Kongos (haven’t decided if I like it yet, but it did go on my running playlist AND they’re of Greek descent). They played in Denver this weekend, I didn’t go (but sort of wish I’d been able to).

5. RIPVIII update: I am halfway through season two of The Walking Dead. So much drama, so little action, all very good. I tried to watch Dark Skies and failed miserably. I turned it off within an hour of starting it. Lesson learned: Never watch a scary movie alone at midnight (especially if it is about alien abductions).

6. The neighborhood I work in has several lunch spots within walking distance (and several homeless people as well). Recently, I bought lunch for one of the homeless people I usually see on my walk (he was behind me in line at the sandwich shop). The person behind him told me I was “perpetuating the problem”. And I had absolutely nothing to say to that, I was speechless.

7. Apparently Generation Y yuppies are unhappy because we all believe life should be rainbows and unicorns and pretty flowers (and this is reinforced by the inflated social media profiles of our friends). Although I’m not sure that I would refer to myself as a yuppie or that I’m swayed by the perfect world depicted on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram, I’ll be the first to admit that I do whine and complain with enthusiasm. I get irritable about politics, the religious climate, and the sincere lack of desire to have gun control in the US. But I’m pretty sure I’m not unhappy because I believed life would be all sunshine and butterflies. I think some of my unhappiness stems from working two jobs to pay for my student loans (and other expenses that come with being an adult, like home renovation) and the exorbitant cost of healthcare. But that’s just me. Also, when I imagine my student loans being paid off, the feeling I get is practically orgasmic. Not even kidding.

8. On that note, I liked this Rolling Stone article about student debt in the US (Ripping Off Young America: The College-Loan Scandal). For what it’s worth, my undergrad is from a public university and my graduate degree is from a private university.

9. Because this whole article is excellent and hilarious: ‘Whole Foods is like Vegas. You go there to feel good but you leave broke, disoriented, and with the newfound knowledge that you have a vaginal disease.’ If you haven’t read it already, I’d recommend it.

10. Tomorrow I will be going to the bookstore to buy my long-awaited copy of Doctor Sleep. Surprised? Thought not.

So anyone else take on any home improvement projects as of late? Anyone want to take over mine? Because, as I said above, I don’t mind sharing – I’m nice like that. Or, if you did participate in Top Ten Tuesday, do you have a favorite book sequel. I definitely do not.
