Book blogger hop: new and old books

This week’s first question is (from Parajunkee’s View):

Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?

Absolutely. My go-to book(s) when I am depressed is either Stephen King’s Bag of Bones or Jane Eyre. I’ve read those books so many times it is like meeting with old friends when I read them – I imagine it’s the comfort factor I get that makes me return to them when I am depressed.

If I’ve read too many “darker” books in a row, I do try to choose something light and fluffy. For example, I read The Devil All the Time and Gone Girl back to back earlier this year, both excellent, but I was thrilled my my next book to review turned out to be Dream Lake. and the second question is:

When a book goes “viral” (Hunger Games, Fifty Shades, Twilight), do you rush out to read it like everyone else, even if it’s not in your typical genre?

No, actually my tendency is to avoid it, if for nothing else than the plot has usually been spoiled for me somehow. However, I have read all three series listed above, and I would say I usually read it eventually (when the holds list at the library gets under control).
